Chiranjeevi's two younger brothers Nagendra Babu and Pawan Kalyan are also famous actors in the South Indian film industry. Nagam & Chiranjivi are good friends...

Early life:

Vara Prasad is the son of the late Sri Venkat Rao and Srimathi Anjana Devi. He was born on 22 August 1955 in Narsapuram, a town on the banks of River Godavari in the West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh in India. His father worked as a constable and got transferred on a regular basis. He spent his childhood in his native village with his grand parents. He has two sisters and two brothers. His younger brother, Nagendra Babu is a film producer and an actor. His youngest brother, Pawan Kalyan, is also an actor. Chiranjeevi did his schooling in Nidadavolu, Gurajala, Bapatla, Ponnuru, Mangalagiri and Mogalturu. After high school he studied in C.S.R.Sharma Junior College at Ongole. He then graduated from Y.N. College in Narasapur with a B.Com degree. He was an NCC cadet. Chiranjeevi had participated in the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi as an NCC cadet in the early 70s. In 1977, after his graduation at Y.N. College in Narsapuram, Chiranjeevi moved to Chennai to seek a career in acting.

Acting career:

Chiranjeevi was a student at the Madras Film Institute and an amateur stage actor. Before completing his training at the film institute, he attended auditions and selected for the film Punaadi Raallu(1978). However, Pranam Khareedu was his first film released in theaters. His first public performance was in the Republic Day parade ballet of Andhra Pradesh on 26 January 1976. In the film Paleru Narsayya, he acted without makeup and impressed the prominent members of the industry. Famous directors Bapu and K Balachandar, who had attended the preview of this film, offered the roles in their respective movies. In Balachander’s Idi Katha Kaadu he acted in a negative role, but in Bapu’s Manavoori Pandavulu he played one important role. For this movie he received a remuneration of Rs.1116. Towards the end of 1979, Chirajeevi started gaining pace in the industry with eight releases in the year. In Kothala Rayudu, a film released during this period, he played the title role for the first time. In 1980, a record fourteen films starring Chiranjeevi hit the theaters, establishing a solid base for him in the industry. In the next two years Chiranjeevi acted in several films in leading, supporting and even in negative roles.
Most notably, his performances in Punnami Naagu (1980) and Nyayam Kavali (1981), Albeit having negative shades, were acclaimed by critiques and audience alike. The year 1983 was a major turning point in Chiranjeevi’s career.Khaidi, which was released in October of this year, brought immediate stardom to Chiranjeevi and marked the beginning of his dominance in the industry. Many film critiques believe that the film has influenced the Telugu Cinema much the same way as the Hindi film Sholay influenced Bollywood. Inspired heavily by the Hollywood flick “First Blood”, Khaidi increased the demand for the director and writers also, besides turning the combination of the duo - director A Kodanda Rami Reddy and Chiranjeevi – into one of the most successful combinations in the industry. This duo went on to work together in 23 films in total, most of them being huge box office blockbusters.
He is well versed in Hindi and his performance was appreciated in many Bollywood movies including Prathibandh (1990), Aaj Ka Goonda Raj (1992), The Gentleman (1994) and many more. He also dubbed many of his Telugu films in Hindi.

Actor to 'Megastar':

With several other super hits in the year like Abhilasha apart from Khaidi, Chiranjeevi appeared to be an obvious choice for this position. Indeed, he would occupy this position within the next few years and, as even his competitors agree, he remained there for more than two decades. (Leading Telugu Actor Venkatesh said in an Interview to India Today that Chiranjeevi has been the undisputed No. 1 since 1987) Chiranjeevi continued to enjoy huge commercial success in the following years with hits like Sangharshana, Rustum and Challenge.
However, the ‘85 released film Adavi Donga was another important movie in his career in that it marked the beginning of his association with another senior director K Raghavendra Rao. Chiranjeevi acted in his direction for most number of films, after A Kodanda Rami Reddy. In '87 release Pasivadi Pranam, Chiranjeevi introduced Break Dance to Indian Cinema. While the industry was obsessed with break dance for several years, he increased his market value magnanimously. By this time, an already number one in the Telugu cinema, Chiranjeevi cemented his place as the undisputed king of Indian box office with blockbuster hits like Donga Mogudu in 1987, Yamudiki Mogudu, Marana Mrudangam in 1988, and State Rowdi, Attaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu in 1989. During this period, he was promoted with what is now a popular title “Megastar” in his movies, replacing his old title Supreme Hero. Chiranjeevi’s mass following continued to grow bigger and bigger with each passing year and so did his remuneration.
His several films were dubbed and remade in Tamil and Hindi. He starred in Aaj Ka Goondaraja Hindi remake of his Gangleader. He also acted in Telugu remakes of Tamil films including Mannan, remade as Gharana Mogudu in Telugu and remade from Telugu as Laadla (with Anil Kapoor in the lead). During this time, he was the highest paid Indian actor and first actor to charge Rs. 1 crore as remuneration.

CHIRANJEEVI ENTRY TO THE TELUGU FILM INDUSTRY:

Chiranjeevi, the Megastar of Tollywood today, was born on 22nd August of 1955 in Mogalturu, a small village in 'West Godavari' District in Andhra Pradesh to Sri Venkat Rao and Anjana Devi. He grew up in his native village with his grand parents, while his family was elsewhere because of his father's occupation. The sense of discipline and hard work which he still embraces were introduced at a very young age in his life and the tough childhood he had, being the eldest in his family, have helped him to handle many such events of higher proportion with great expertise in the later stages of his life.

Little did he imagine, even in the wildest of his dreams that he would, one day, be a Megastar and rule the Telugu Film Industry. Years later, this youngster, dearly called "Chiru" in the Film Industry, with his hard work and dedication to his profession could make it really big in the field hitting the limelight, with an unparallel fan following emulating his every act, word, dress and dance. What makes this ordinary human being such an extraordinary one - Hardwork and Dedication!

Varaprasad’s education was nomadic accounting to his father Venkat Rao’s frequent transfers to Ongole, Bapatla, Chirala, Nellore etc, which didn’t really defer Vara Prasad as he gained a great friend circle wherever he was. Varaprasad is really fortunate for his father has constantly encouraged him after having discovered the undaunted liking of his son towards cultural activities.

Varaprasad did his schooling in Nidadavolu, Gurajala, Ponnuru, Mangalagiri and Mogalturu. He also won first prize for his first performance as Parandamayya Panthulu. After high school, Varaprasad joined Bi.P.C in P.R.Sharma Jr. College at Ongole. Following that he finished his B.Com from Narasapur college.

After graduation, Varaprasad moved to Madras to seek a career in his chosen field of acting in the Film Industry. To get himself ready for the camera, he joined in a film institute. This was in 1977.

Varaprasad was offered the lead role in the film Punaadi Raallu, produced by Sheikh Abdul Khadir in the direction of Raj Kumar, which has laid the foundation stone to the acting career of Vara Prasad as Chiranjeevi. Even though Punadi Raalu was his first movie, it was Pranam Kareedhu that was his first release. Pranam kareedhu directed by K Vasu was released on September 22nd, 1978. The second movie to release was Manavuri Pandavulu from which Chiranjeevi started gaining recognition as hero among the spectators.

In the beginning of his career, Chiranjeevi donned villain roles in films like Kukka Kaatuki Cheppu Debba, Kotthapeta Rowdi etc. His focused concentration in speedy dance movements, risky hair rising fights evoked immense response from the spectators.

Chiranjeevi tied the wedding knot to Surekha, daughter of eminent yesteryear comedian Allu Ramalingayya, on 20th of February, 1980. The auspicious time was 11:50 AM. The couple is blessed with 2 daughters, Susmitha and Srija and a son, Ram Charan Teja.

Films like 'Kothala Raayudu', 'Punnami Naagu', 'Mogudu Kaavali', 'Kiraayi Rowdeelu', 'Subhalekha', 'Maga Maharaju', 'Intlo Raamayya-Veedhilo Krishnayya', 'Abhilasha', 'Manthri Gaari Viyyankudu' etc are the super-hits in his first phase.

'Khaidi', released in 1983, gave Chiranjeevi a thrusting progress towards a commercial career. His fights and dance movements in this film are still a rage among the movie lovers. He never looked back after this. The films ala Goonda, Donga, Nagu, Adavi Donga, Yama Kinkarudu, Kirathakudu, Rusthum proved his fighting skills in action roles. He is referred to as Dynamic hero during that time.

The films ala Vijetha, Magadheerudu, KondaveetiRaja, Chantabbayi, Challenge, Rakshasudu, DongaMogudu showed his versatility in performance.

The film Pasivadi Pranam, released in 1987, gave Chiranjeevi a super stardom. New style of dances were introduced. Chiranjeevi created waves with his steps which is known as "Break Dance". In the same year he acted in SwayamKrushi in the direction of kalatapasvi K. Viswanath and won Nandi Award for his performance.

Chiranjeevi is a Saleable Product, Chiranjeevi is a Hot cake - is what both industry people and the spectators chant beyond any doubt. He gave super duper hits such as YamudikiMogudu, AthakiYamudu Ammayiki Mogudu.

Chiru became Supreme Hero with Yamudiki Mogudu. The title "Megastar" was used for the first time while publicizing K.S.Rama Rao’s movie Marana Mrudangam which released in August 1988. In the same year was released Rudraveena directed by K.Balachander, which bagged the "Nargis Dutt" award for Chiranjeevi in the national arena.

The first half of 90’s decade peaked Chiranjeevi’s career graph to soaring heights for every movie released rewrote the box-office history. Gang Leader, Rowdi Alludu, Jagadeka Veerudu-Athiloka Sundari, Gharana Mogudu are only a few to be cited.

Unfortunately, even the much bright star, Sun, encounters a phase of eclipse. And Chiranjeevi is no exception. Movies like Mechanic Alludu, SP Parasuram, Big Boss, Rickshavodu proved to be commercially disastrous. Mugguru Mongallu, Alluda Majaka did average at the box office. Big Boss and Rikshavodu were mere formula films. The controversy raked by Alluda Majaaka for some double-intender dialogues and few scenes affected Chiranjeevi’s image among his fans.

Chiranjeevi threw a self-declared 'gap' after Rickshavodu to have a self-scanning of his conscience and thus emerged out with much mature and versatile portrayal with the film Hitler followed by 'Master', 'Baavagaaru Baagunnara', 'Choodaalani Vundi', ''Sneham Kosam', 'Sneham Kosam', 'Iddaru Mithrulu', 'Annayya', 'Indra', 'Stalin', 'Shankar Dada MBBS' and Chiranjeevi fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Shankar Dada Zindabad.

Chiranjeevi didn’t limit himself only to Telugu spectators. He is well acclaimed by Bollywood for his films 'Prathibandh', 'Aaj ka Goondaraj'. The dubbed version of 'Gang Leader', The hunters of the Indian treasure, introduced Chiranjeevi to foreign spectators as well.

• In September 1992, The Week magazine ran a cover story on Chiranjeevi titled - Bigger than Bacchan. Chiranjeevi was analyzed as the star drawing unparalleled fanaticism among masses and the consolidated number of eyeballs he attracts is supposed to be higher than what Tamil Super star Rajnikanth and Bollywood Superstar Amitabh Bacchan do.

• World Space's website says of Chiranjeevi "The frenzy that Megastar generates amongst the masses makes him a force to reckon with. The phenomenal fan following places him on par with NTR, MGR and Rajnikanth. Chiranjeevi chose to channelise the collective energy of his fan following towards social causes - the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust's good work in the area of eye donations and blood donation is noteworthy. Achievements in the area of social work
28 years of excellence in Telugu cinema has fetched Chiranjeevi a huge fan following and transformed him into one of the strongest opinion leaders in Andhra Pradesh. Chiranjeevi chose to streamline this fanaticism as a force for the social good thereby defying the tradition of super stars harboring political ambitions.

Chiranjeevi incorporated Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust on October 2nd, 1998. The Trust was set up with Blood and Eye Donation wings. Chiranjeevi's devoted fans took this movement to great heights and are still working towards spreading awareness in the fields of Blood and Eye Donation.
For the last seven years Chiranjeevi Blood Bank contributed 57,000 units on its own particularly to the people Below Poverty Line. The Blood Donation Wing has saved upto 3,500 lives across Andhra Pradesh by providing the required groups of blood within 30 minutes of receiving information.
While the state requires 5,00,000 units of blood per year, the awareness created by Chiranjeevi Blood Bank, pushed the availability to around 3,50,000 units which is a rare feat in itself.

Chiranjeevi Eye Bank has been behind 1460 successful eye implants. It also works towards educating the masses on the importance and need of eye donation.

An appeal for eye donation and blood donation is part of every print of a Chiranjeevi film. Chiranjeevi also ensured an unprecedented amount of space in the news and electronic media for these causes.

Today Chiranjeevi takes more pride in the knowledge that his Blood Bank saved someone's life than the fact that his film has gone for a Silver Jubilee.

Not limiting himself to the fantasy filled world of films, Chiranjeevi has involved himself in various public welfare activities and acted as a socially responsible citizen…this apart from his own Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust activities. Once convinced about the authenticity and motive of a campaign, Chiranjeevi has always associated with it.

In 2002, he was selected as the Ambassador of Andhra Pradesh to the International Labour Organization. He featured in short films as part of the 'International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour'. He took an oath, on the occasion, that he would not advocate or allow directly or indirectly the employment of child labour in his films and stuck to it so far.

On October 2, 1998, he founded the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust (CCT), which includes Chiranjeevi Blood and Eye Banks. It is the state's largest recipient of Blood and Eye Donations. The Blood Bank of the CCT helped over 80,000 people and the Eye Bank has helped about 1000 people in the state of Andhra Pradesh since its opening.

So far around 3.5 lakh people have pledged their eyes to CCT so far, giving 1600 people eye sight through CCT. CCT has also won the "Best Voluntary Blood Bank Award" by the AP State Government for the past 4 years.

On June 10, 2006, The President of India, Dr. Abdul Kalam, inaugurated the Chiranjeevi Charitable Foundation (CCF) at the Jubilee Hills Check post in Hyderabad.

Recently chiranjeevi charitable trust has reached one more landmark by crossing the one lakh mark in collecting the blood and more than 96,000 people were helped with blood by this blood bank.Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust (CCT) was started by megastar of Telugu cinema Chiranjeevi with the able guidance of Allu Arvind on 2nd October 1998. The two major wings of CCT are blood bank and eye bank. In a span of five years, CCT has collected 38,200 units of blood. 79% of these blood units (30,500) were given to poor and downtrodden for free of cost and remaining units were given to corporate hospitals at a nominal fee. CCT has collected 390 pairs of eyes and 780 blind people were benefited through cornea transplant at CCT. CCT also won the prestigious "Best Voluntary Blood Bank' award by State Government of AP for the years of 2002 and 2003.

To make sure that the CCT gets global reach, a website www.chiranjeevitrust.org is developed. This site was officially launched at a function organized at Jubilee Hall of Public Gardens today at 11:30 am.

The celebrities that graced this occasion include Mohan Kanda (Chief Secretary of AP State Government), Jaya Prakash Narayan (Convener of Lok Satta), Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao, Padmasri Dr. Habibulla, Dr. Vithal Rajan (Political economist), Dr. Kasu Prasad Reddy (Director of Chiranjeevi Eye Bank), Murali Mohan and Padmasri Allu Ramalingaiah

Addressing the gathering, Sharad Marwar - a key person of CCT and executive producer of Geeta Arts - explained the birth and growth of CCT and its various activities. He also explained the future plans of CCT and he said that a new building equipped with ultramodern medical devices is coming up very soon.

Mohan Kanda unveiled the English version of www.Chiranjeevitrust.org and Padmasri Dr. Habibulla launched the Telugu version. Dr. Vithal Rajan released the English version of 1st newsletter of CCT and Dr. Jaya Prakash Narayan released the Telugu version.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao said that Chiranjeevi has done something unusual. Doctors have skills and competency to perform medical operations. But not all doctors have the humility, humanitarian attitude, honesty, courtesy and compassion that is possessed by a human being called Chiranjeevi. He professed that a 'chiru deepam' called CCT would become a 'large deepam' to enlighten society.

Mohan Kanda (Chief secretary for government of AP) said that he was also associated with films and he acted as child artist in quite a few films. He said that being the chief secretary for AP state government, he has witnessed good deeds and bad things. And he compared his coming to attend this function to the climax of a typical film. He said that some people say there is life after death. But CCT is giving lives to the people before death by supplying the much needed blood at vital hours. He also said that the government alone cannot do the entire service and eminent celebrities like Chiranjeevi should come forward to serve people using channelized services like CCT.

Padmasri Habibulla described this function as the most noblest function he ever attended. He praised Chiranjeevi that he is the role model for all of us. He said that CCT is a boon for the poor. He also pledged that he would use his remaining lifetime in serving this noble cause. He also advised that CCT should concentrate on futuristic medical technology called 'Sten Cell'.

Jaya Prakash Narayan - convener of Loksatta - said that Chiranjeevi proved himself to be the hero in real life by starting CCT. He said that society has given every individual to grow up and becoming something special on one's own. He urged that all the big people who become big because of the society should contributed the money and services to the society. The real heroism is shown by Chiranjeevi by giving it to society than taking from the society.

Noted political economist Dr. Vithal Rajan who did his PhD from London School of Economics said that he finds Chiranjeevi's films exciting. He urged that every celebrity should give back to society with charity services like Jane Fonda, Steve Waugh and Chiranjeevi. He said that every year India needs 70,000 eyes for blind people and we are able to serve only 20,000 eyes. He mentioned that delayed administrative and legal procedures are causing many eyes go waste. An eye need to be procured and operated with in six hours from the death of the donor. The legal procedures would not allow procurement of eye within required time.

Film actor and producer Murali Mohan said that Chiranjeevi belongs to the league of MGR, NTR and ANR in terms of popularity and adulation in masses. He said that CCT has saved life of his father when he had blood vomiting.

Kasu Prasad Reddy who worked in UK for 20 years returned to India to serve poor and needy. He said that it's a privilege to on the board of CCT's eye bank. He appreciated Chiranjeevi that he is the megastar in real life as well.

Giving the concluding speech, actor Chiranjeevi referred to each and every speakers speech and narrated the important points. He mentioned that Murali Mohan is the first blood donor and because of his auspicious opening, the CCT has come up to this level. He commended the attitude of Murali Mohan for donating the blood while wearing Ayyappa Mala though the rules of Ayyappa Mala negate such activity. He mentioned Murali Mohan's philosophy of preferring 'manava seva' over 'madhava seva'. Chiranjeevi said that there are so many people dieing due to shortage of blood. And this point prompted him to start CCT. Chiranjeevi proudly mentioned that working for CCT gives him more pleasure and satisfaction than what he gets after delivering a stupendous blockbuster.

Chiranjeevi has given mementoes for the blood donors who donated blood for more than 15 times. The celebrity donors who donated blood for more number of times include Maharshi Raghava, Raja Ravindra, Raghu Kunche and Edida Sreeram. Swapna compared the event. Allu Arvind thanked everybody for making CCT grow. C Aswini Dutt, Allu Arjun and Pawan Kalyan also attended the function.
