He was born on 9th of August 1974 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father is Krishna and mother is Indira , and he is one of five siblings; an older brother Ramesh, two older sisters Padmavathi and Manjula and a younger sister Priyadarshini. He did his schooling at St Bede’s School in Chennai and obtained a degree in Commerce from Loyola College, Chennai. He married Namrata Shirodkar in 2005 and they have a son together - Goutham Krishna.
Biography

Film career

1999-2003

He started his career as a child artist. His debut was in Raja Kumarudu, starring opposite Preity Zinta, and he won the Nandi Award for Best Male Debut. In 2000, he starred in Yuvaraju and this film gave him the title "Prince". In the same year, he shared screen space with Namrata Shirodkar and his father Krishna in Vamsi which failed miserably at the Box office. Murari in 2001 with Sonali Bendre, which was directed by Krishna Vamsi, did well at the box office, and won him a Nandi Award - Special Jury. He won the award again in 2002 for Takkari Donga which is a cowboy movie filled with adventures with action,comedy which has done decently well. Lisa Ray and Bipasha Basu played the female leads in that movie. In 2002, he starred in Bobby opposite Arthi Agarwal which turned out to be an average grosser. In 2003, he acted in Gunasekhar's Okkadu with Bhoomika Chawla which turned out to be a blockbuster and a trend setter movie.It was remade in Tamil by Vijay and it is big hit in Tamil also.His acclaimed performance in Okkadu won him the Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Award. His next movie, Nijam, failed at the box office but his performance won him another NANDI award.

2004-2008

He acted in Nani under the direction of S. J. Suryaah. Another Nandi Award for Special Jury went his way for his role in Arjun acting with Shriya Saran. Athadu in 2005 brought him huge success and won him another Nandi - Best Actor Award. The 2006 release Pokiri won him the Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Award for his portrayal in lead role. The film went on to become a huge commercial success breaking many existing box-office records. It was directed by Puri Jagannadh. A remake of this film was made in Bollywood named Wanted starring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia and in Kollywood named Pokkiri starring Vijay and Asin, which also became a huge success. He has one more release Sainikudu under the direction of Gunasekhar in the same year (2006) followed by Pokiri which was dubbed in Tamil. He paired up with Trisha in Sainikudu which flopped eventually at the box office.Athidi with Amrita Rao released in 2007 was produced by his brother Ramesh Babu. The film ended up as an average grosser which was taken by UTV motion pictures and it has been dubbed in Tamil as well. In this movie, titles displayed Super Star Mahesh Babu, bestowing him with the title of his legendary father Super Star Krishna. In the year 2008, he gave voice over to the film Jalsa. This movie was starred by his co-star Pavan Kalyan and Ileana and was directed by Trivikram Srinivas, who was the director of Athadu.
